Preparing for Winter
As the winter draws in it is becoming increasingly important to do the necessary engine health checks on your vehicle before the extreme weather inevitably hits.
Volkswagen UK supports TyreSafe’s Winter Tyre campaign 2011, encouraging used VW Kent drivers to be safe on the roads this winter by replacing tyres ready for the difficult conditions that lay ahead.
Winter tyres use a rubber compound that ensures the tyres are less affected when used in plummeting temperatures. Conventional tyres become tough and unmanageable in cold temperatures, giving you less traction and stability when cornering or coming to a stand-still in tough, slippery road conditions. The compound used for Winter tyres, however, remains softer in low temperatures and tyres are able to grip the road’s surface due to the special tread pattern. This ensures more grip, as traction is maximized from the additional grooves.
It is recommended that Winter tyres should in fact be fitted for 6 months of our 12 month calendar, regardless of visible snow on the ground. Most drivers use their vehicles for a daily commute both mornings and evenings and this is when daily temperatures are at their lowest average. According to TyreSafe, braking distances can be reduced by up to 11 metres in icy conditions and around 8 metres in snowy weathers.
