New Golf Blue E-Motion Triumphs at Future Car Challenge
The Volkswagen Golf Blue-e-Motion electric vehicle has won for the second time the RAC Future Car Challenge, whereby the Golf used the least energy throughout the 57 mile route from Brighton’s Madeira Drive to Pall Mall in London.
The Golf had plenty of competition as the event attracted far more entrants than any other year, the competition included hybrids, fuel cell models and highly efficient diesel cars for instance the Passat BlueMotion. But the Golf Blue-e-Motion came out on top and won the Most Energy Efficient Regular Car (prototype) class.
The Golf Blue-e-Motion has an electric motor and is powered by lithium-ion batteries with a power peak output of 115 PS which ranges to about 100 miles. The maximum speed is 86 mph with acceleration to 62 mph in 11.8 seconds.
The intelligent battery regeneration reduces energy wasted as it activates when the accelerator is released and during the first travel of the brake pedal, it’s surprising that from the outside the Golf Blue-e-Motion looks like any other Golf.
The golf was not the only Volkswagen entrant; there was another Golf Blue-e-Motion driven by Jim holder, editor of Autocar magazine and co-driven by Volkswagen engineer Eike Feldhusen. The third vehicle was a production Passat BlueMotion driven by motoring journalist Richard Aucock and Edd China.
The Passat is one of the lowest polluting internal combustion engine vehicles in the market as it’s powered by a 1.6 litre diesel engine using aerodynamic and various mechanical changes to make the engine more efficient.
The Golf Blue-e-Motion is planned to go into production and released into the market late 2013, but the Passat BlueMotion is available now, for further information on new Volkswagen cars visit Euro Canterbury.
